Insulin and Weight Gain

To be successful at losing weight, it helps to understand the relationship between insulin and weight gain.

When you spike your insulin level with simple carbs, you tell your body to store instead of burn the calories and this makes it the trigger of weight gain.

Michael Thurmond explains this in "The Simple Chemistry of Food" as follows:

"Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar in your body. When there are high levels of insulin in our blood it causes a chemical reaction that tells your body to store the calories you eat instead of burning them.

Remember that most foods that taste sweet are generally simple carbs and have the ability to "spike" insulin levels.

One helping of just one of these simple sugars by itself can spike your insulin and slow your metabolism to the point that your body essentially STOPS burning fat. These simple carbs can effectively STOP weight loss."

Now that you know about insulin and weight gain, have a look at understanding carbohydrates
