Understanding Carbohydrates in Food
Carbohydrates in food are essential in order to keep your body functioning well. "Carbs" or Carbohydrates are the direct precursors to glucose - a form of sugar. Glucose is what fuels both MUSCLE TISSUE and YOUR BRAIN.
Carbohydrates can be subdivided into two groups
Simple carbohydrates or "bad" carbs are converted to sugar very quickly by your body. Sweet foods like table sugar, candy, honey or molasses and most sweet fruits are all examples of simple carbs.
Complex carbohydrates or "good" carbs are converted to simple sugars much more SLOWLY by your body. Examples of complex carbs are potatoes, yams, rice, wheat and other grains.
